Upper & Newton

Hey class 2014! It’s me, Amy Ye, again! Still pondering on your first year housing options? This time I’d like to provide some information about housing at BC and hopefully my experience can help you decide which campus to choose.
I personally live on Upper Campus (BC students call it “Upper”), which locates on the west end of BC main campus. To sum up all the advantage s of Upper Campus by one word, I would use “convenience”. It is merely a five-minute walk from Upper to the Eagle’s Nest and McElroy Common, which are two wonderful places to enjoy great food offered by BC. Also, it only takes five minutes to walk from Upper to the shuttle bus station near McElory Common through which you can access Reservoir Subway Station and other banks, stores as well as restaurants in Cleveland Circle. Most importantly, students will tremendously benefit from Upper’s short distance to the main academic area. And usually you will only spend eight to ten minutes on walking to O’Neil Library or Fulton Hall. In a word, students really enjoy the various conveniences and the enormous amount of saved time brought by Upper.
On the other hand, to describe Newton (short for Newton Campus), I would prefer the phrase “community sense”. Newton Campus settles on the North side of Newton Centre, and 1.25 miles away from the main campus. Surrounded by the Edmands Park, Newton residents always deems it a segregated paradise for silent studying. As all the residents on Newton are freshmen (about 40% of the entire freshmen class), it is always easier to meet new peer friends in Newton and therefore create a sense of “Newton Community” or so-called “Newton Pride”. Moreover, Undergraduate students usually find that Newton provides an almost complete undergraduate experience, including six residence halls, a dining hall, library, post office, gyms, etc. The only necessary thing missing is undergraduate classes. All the academic facilities in Newton are utilized by BC Law School. Undergraduate students utilize the services of Boston College's shuttle bus, which runs from 7:00 am to 2:00 am each day of the academic year, to travel to the main campus for academic classes.
I hope my information provided here can more or less help you out on making your final decision. For more questions, feel free to email me by: yebe@bc.edu, or check out the following website: http://www.bc.edu/admission/undergrad/process/tips/s-newtonupper.html
